(10 de abril de 2026 – San Juan, Puerto Rico) The welfare of black and afrodescendant youths in Puerto Rico is profoundly conditioned by racism, according to an investigation by Colectivo Ilé titled “Exploring Perceptions of Well-Being and the Impact of Experiences of Racism on the Well-Being of Black and Afro-Descendant Young Adults in Puerto Rico.” The study concluded that welfare is not limited to individual factors like health and income, but responds to a combination of economical, social, cultural, and political conditions.

“Welfare is having food, housing, access to services, and emotional stability”, says a testimony gathered in the study.

The study documents that 86.5% of participants indicated they experienced unfair treatment due to their racial appearance of skin color. These experiences were reported mainly in educational spaces, workplace, businesses, and social media.

The proyect was financed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, with the support of Vida Afrolatina, and the collaboration of the University of Cayey Institute for Interdisciplinary Investigations.
