Sara Benítez Delgado

Co-president

Sara is a feminist, sociologist, and social sciences professor. She is a Retired Professor from the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao. At that campus, she held several academic and administrative leadership positions, including Dean of Academic Affairs.

Along with Professor Idalia Ramos, she founded the first violence prevention program for women at UPR-Humacao and the “Flagship” project, sponsored by OVW funds, to develop violence prevention programs for women across all UPR campuses. She served as the director of that project from 2000 to 2008.

From April 2008 to January 2009, she held the position of Deputy Women’s Rights Solicitor of Puerto Rico. She also worked directly on the development of the 2015 Women’s Agenda for Puerto Rico. She was a Facilitator for the Coordinating Committee of the Peace for Women Coalition (Coordinadora Paz para las Mujeres) and a board member of the Casa Julia and Casa de la Bondad shelters, as well as Proyecto Matria. From February 2013 to January 2017, she was the director of the Office for the Integral Development of Women in San Juan and the Department of Social Community Development for the same municipality. She is currently a member and spokesperson for the Broad Movement of Women of Puerto Rico (Movimiento Amplio de Mujeres).

She has participated in many feminist gatherings in Puerto Rico and internationally. She has delivered lectures, facilitated workshops, and written articles on gender issues, women in science, violence against women, civic dialogue and competencies, participatory research, and social action-research.

She holds a Master’s degree in Social Planning from the UPR and completed all doctoral coursework in Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY-Albany).
