Asociación Agro-Mujer de Puerto Rico
What do they do?
The Asociación Agro‑Mujer de Puerto Rico, Inc. is a nonprofit agricultural organization dedicated to advancing women-led agriculture. Its focus is on supporting the creation of home-based microenterprises, establishing family gardens with local socioeconomic impact, and strengthening communities through sustainable agriculture. It currently has three active chapters across the island, from which they offer workshops, participate in farmers markets, and collaborate with various partner organizations.
History and origins
Although an exact founding date in Mayagüez was not found, records indicate that Agro‑Mujer was founded in 2010 to support Puerto Rican women in agriculture, helping them develop their agribusinesses as a source of family livelihood.
In the specific case of Mayagüez, a formal chapter in that locality is not mentioned. However, there is a strong historical and educational connection with the Women’s Business Center in Agriculture (CEMA) at the University of Mayagüez Campus, led by Dr. Gladys González. This center has been key in training hundreds of women in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, and legal matters. It was instrumental in creating initiatives such as Agro‑Mujer and other agribusiness associations in Puerto Rico.
Why is it important?
In addition to strengthening food security and food sovereignty, this association empowers women by enabling them to develop their own agricultural ventures, generate income, and strengthen their personal and family autonomy.
Through regular workshops, participation in markets, and solidarity networks, members overcome access barriers, build self-esteem, and share knowledge with one another.
