INTER-Mujeres (Institute for Women, Gender, and Law Studies) is an academic initiative established by the School of Law at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Its primary goal is to promote legal knowledge regarding the rights of women and girls, as well as the various forms of sex and gender discrimination.

Mission and Focus

INTER-Mujeres develops strategies to dismantle the structural conditions that perpetuate inequality, violence against women and girls, and the imposition of exclusionary or discriminatory gender concepts. In doing so, it seeks to transform the legal and academic systems by incorporating a gender perspective into legal education.

The organization analyzes how legal norms, public policies, judicial decisions, and institutional practices can both perpetuate discrimination and contribute to its eradication. It also delves into the intersection between inequalities based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, social standing, and ethnic or racial origin.

Vision

INTER-Mujeres is committed to a jurisprudential and academic transformation that includes a gender perspective as a fundamental pillar of justice. Its ambition is for the legal system to not only recognize but also redress historical inequalities and promote real equity in Puerto Rico.
