More than 15,000 women, girls, and gender expansive people in situations of emergency, violence, or social marginalization receive the services of nonprofit organizations. This finding arose from a study, titled “Profile and impact of community organizations that offer services to cisgender women and girls, transgender and transfeminized people in Puerto Rico”, by Estudios Técnicos Inc., in colaboration with the Women’s foundation in Puerto Rico. The report gathered data about the profile, impact, and cost-benefit of organizations dedicated to providing services in areas such as gender violence, education, health, housing, social justice and economic empowerment.
The investigation director, Anitza María Cox Marrero, commented it took place in a context where organizations faced great challenges and limited resources, including limited physical spaces, restricted access to administrative funds, insufficient human resources, and high staff rotation due to a lack of competitive salary. Between the 18 entities that participated, they barely count on five employees and nine volunteers in the median of cases.
The organizations offer essential services for women below the poverty level, survivors of gender violence, the LGBTTQI+ community, women in rural areas and the general community. The participants found judgement-free spaces, psychological accompaniment, tecnical training, and even shelter in violent situations within these organizations. Additionally, half of the organizations offer services to boys, men, and transmasculinized people.
